I am both the strongest and the weakest man I have ever known
Men carry this split quietly.

The part that holds everything together and the part that is sometimes barely holding. Most of us learned early that only one of those halves was acceptable. So we buried the other one and got very good at pretending it wasn't there.
What this does to a relationship is particular. The man your woman chose is only half present. The rest of him is locked somewhere he can’t talk about. She can feel it. She just doesn't know what she's feeling. She thinks it's distance. She thinks it's her. She starts filling in the blank with the worst possible answers.
Here's what I know from watching my wife navigate me at my lowest, and from sitting across from hundreds of women who love men like me:
Women don't want their man to be invulnerable.
They want him to be real. The invulnerable man is lonely to live with. You can't reach him. You can't touch him. You are always on the outside of something you can't name.
The strongest men I know are not the ones who need nothing. They are the ones who stopped lying about what they need. That's the version of a man a woman can actually love.
If your man is shut down, it is probably not indifference. It is more likely an identity that got cut in half a long time ago, by something he didn't choose. That doesn't mean you carry it for him.
It means you might stop mistaking his silence for rejection.
He's in there. He just forgot part of himself was allowed.
