Nobody tells you that complaints aren't really complaints at all

They're requests that you never learned to ask.

Nobody tells you that complaints aren't really complaints at all: Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

"You never talk to me anymore."

That's a woman who wants to be heard and doesn't know how to say it without making him wrong first. The complaint lands like an accusation. He defends himself. She feels more alone. Nothing changes.

“You never plan anything anymore” can become "I feel disconnected" can become "Do you want to cuddle tonight?" Same feeling. Completely different outcome. It opens a door.

"You never do anything special for me anymore" can become "Could you plan us a date night once a week?" Now he has something to work with.

Men are not bad at love. BUT a lot of them are HORRIBLE at guessing (I’m one of them). Give him something real and watch what he does with it.

I hear this pattern constantly in the men and women I work with. The complaint has been running for months. Sometimes years. He's gone quiet because he doesn't know how to win. She's gone cold because she doesn't feel chosen. Both of them are waiting for the other one to move first.

The complaint keeps the problem alive. The request starts solving it.

This is not about swallowing what you feel. It's about getting what you actually want. You are allowed to want things. You are allowed to ask for them plainly. That is the most direct route to the relationship you keep saying you want.

He cannot meet a need he can't see. Make it visible.

Yes, it’s more vulnerable, but at least you have a chance of getting your needs met, maybe even all of them.
