Expectation is a form of control.

One thing I see constantly in dating is how quickly unspoken expectations take over: Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

And control is a response to fear.

When a woman has been let down, abandoned or disappointed enough times, she starts protecting herself by tightening the rules. She tries to create safety by predicting everything a man should do… before he ever does it.

Expectation is about preventing pain.

But here’s the problem: expectation might feel like safety, but it creates the exact opposite. It shuts down connection. It makes you evaluate instead of feel. It keeps you in your head instead of your body.

And a man feels it immediately, because to him it doesn’t read as “I’m scared.” It reads as “I’m being judged,” “I’m already failing,” or “There’s no room for me to be human here.”

And then women think men are pulling away because they don’t care. Most of the time, they pull away because they feel like they can’t win.

Appreciation is the opposite energy.

It’s not about lowering your standards.

It’s about shifting from fear to openness.

From control to connection.

Appreciation communicates safety. It tells a man, “You can relax with me. You don’t have to perform. You don’t have to be perfect. Just be you.” And when a man feels that, he naturally does more. He naturally takes initiative. He naturally shows up with confidence instead of defensiveness.

Here’s what this looks like in real life:

He plans a date. It’s not what you imagined. Expectation says, “He should’ve known better.” Appreciation says, “Thank you for planning something, I like when you take the lead.” He grows from that energy. He learns you. He improves because he wants to, not because he’s trying to avoid punishment.

He texts less frequent one day. Expectation interprets it as a threat: “Is he losing interest?” Appreciation sees the effort: “Thanks for checking in, hope your day was okay. I like hearing from you” You’re not lying. You’re acknowledging that he reached out.

He shares something vulnerable about work or stress. Expectation analyzes whether it’s a red flag. Appreciation responds to the courage it took to share it. His nervous system opens instead of shutting down.

Expectation says, “Prove to me I’m safe.”

Appreciation says, “You don’t need to be perfect for me to feel safe.”

And that difference changes the dynamic.

When a woman shifts from expectation to appreciation, she gains in power. Because she stops relating from fear and starts relating from truth. And truth is where connection grows.

A man can’t love you when he feels controlled.

Read that again.

But he becomes his best self when he feels valued.

Fear tightens.

Appreciation softens.

And softness is what makes him step forward instead of stepping away.
