But there is also a shadow side to it.

I see a lot of women doing a ton of inner work, and it’s incredible!: Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

Because she's capable she understands people. She can track the thread between someone's wound and their behaviour. She can hold complexity without collapsing. She can find compassion where other people would just leave.

That capacity is real. It's also the thing that can keep her stuck in the wrong place for years.

When you've done a lot of work on yourself, you develop an almost automatic ability to make sense of other people's behaviour. He pulls away, you understand why. He doesn't follow through, you can trace it back. You find the root, you find your part in it, you orient toward growth.

That's consciousness.

The problem is that consciousness doesn't automatically come with discernment about who deserves it.

Some men genuinely want to grow. Some men, if they're honest with themselves, want to be with a woman who will perpetually make sense of why they don't have to. There's a version of understanding that becomes a very comfortable excuse. And a woman capable enough to always find the explanation becomes, without meaning to, the reason nothing ever has to change.

I've watched women hold a relationship together through sheer intelligence and compassion while their man coasted. They called it growth. What it actually was, was one person doing the heavy lifting and calling it a partnership.

The question isn't whether you're capable of understanding him. You probably are. The question is whether he is actually trying, or whether your understanding has quietly become the ceiling he lives under.

Discernment isn't the opposite of compassion. It's what compassion requires when you're serious about your own life.
