There was a period in my life where I genuinely liked seeing myself as the white knight: Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

I didn’t see it that way at the time, but that’s what it was. I loved the feeling of being the one who could fix everything for her. I loved being the man who made her feel seen, heard, understood, inspired, motivated. It made me feel important.

I would help her with her business, her friendships, her emotional patterns. I’d coach her without calling it coaching. I tried to be the perfect boyfriend. Calm, grounded, supportive, insightful. And she would look at me like I was special.

That look was addictive.

It took me a long time to understand why I did it. I wasn’t being generous, I was being insecure. The whole savior identity was built on the fear that if she didn’t need me, she wouldn’t want me. Deep down I still felt like the boy who wasn’t good enough. The boy who felt like a loser. The boy who was desperate to prove his worth.

So if you’re a woman hoping for a man to “save” you, or longing for that knight in shining armor who rescues you from everything you’re struggling with, be careful what you’re asking for.

The man who needs to save you also needs you to stay broken. Psychologically, his identity depends on it.

The savior eventually becomes the jailor.

Because he needs you to stay small so he can stay big.

He needs you to stay overwhelmed so he can stay impressive.

He needs you to stay unsure so he can stay relevant.

And eventually, both people feel trapped.

Real love doesn’t come from saving someone or being saved.

It comes from two people who are already standing on their own feet, choosing each other without needing to be rescued.
