4 years ago I had a moment with my dad that changed everything
I'm 36. He asks how I'm doing. He has this concerned look on his face. I say I'm good, and I watch this wave of relief wash over him.

I ask, "What happened there, dad?"
He says he's been worried about me.
That stopped me in my tracks. I'm a grown man. A fully grown man. And my father is still carrying worry about me like it's his job.
I know it's love. I know he loves me deeply. But I hadn't given him the one thing he needed: the clear, undeniable sense that his son has his shit together. That I'm okay. That he can rest.
And in that moment I thought, this is backwards. I should be the one worrying about him now. I should be the one asking the questions, checking in, taking care. It was time to switch roles, and I hadn't done it.
That pissed me off. Not at him. At myself.
So I made a decision. I was going to build a life he could actually see. Money sorted. Body healthy. Relationship solid. A home I was proud of. Enough stability and achievement that he'd never have to carry that look on his face again. That he could look at me and feel proud of himself for raising a son like that.
Not for him to tell me. For him to feel it, without having to say a word.
That moment changed how I approached everything.
