It's just fear.

If you're an anxious person, I want to say something that might annoy you at first: Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

Dressed up, given a clinical name, assigned a backstory. But underneath all of it, it's just fear. And fear does one thing really well. It makes everything feel important.

The job interview feels like your worth is on trial. The date feels like a verdict on your lovability. The hard conversation with your man feels like the relationship itself is hanging by a thread. Anxiety turns everything into a referendum on you.

And here's what I've noticed, in myself and in the men and women I work with. The antidote isn't courage. It's not a breathing technique. It's not a morning routine. It's fun. Actual, genuine, this-doesn't-have-to-matter fun.

Fun takes the stakes out.

Because when you're playing, you're not gripping. You stop performing and start participating. The job interview becomes a conversation you're curious about. The date becomes a chance to find out if you actually like him. The phone call you've been putting off for two weeks becomes something you do on a walk with a coffee.

I've seen women transform a hard conversation with their partner the moment they stopped trying to get it right. They laughed at something. They stopped rehearsing. The man across from them relaxed. Something opened.

Good friends of mine have a ritual where whenever she is upset, she winks at him - so he knows she still loves him.

My wife and I have our hardest conversations when neither of us is treating it like a summit. The ones I've tried to prepare for have almost never gone well. The ones where I walked in loose, present, a little irreverent, those worked best.

Growth doesn't require suffering.

It doesn't require weight.

Sometimes the fastest path through the thing you're avoiding is deciding that you're allowed to enjoy it.
