Let me tell you a secret

The man who makes you feel completely at ease on a first date, who says all the right things, who knows exactly when to be funny and when to lean in, who makes you feel like the most interesting woman in the room…

Let me tell you a secret: Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

That man has had a lot of practice.

He's charming because charm is a skill he's sharpened. He reads you well because he's read a lot of women. You feel seen because he knows how to make women feel seen. None of it is fake, exactly. But none of it is for you specifically either…

The man who stumbles over his words a little. Who laughs too loud at his own joke and then looks slightly mortified. Who doesn't quite know what to do with his hands. Who misses your sarcasm and responds sincerely. That man is on a date, and he's nervous because it matters to him.

A lot of good women have screened out good men this way.

The awkwardness read as low value. The nervousness read as weakness. The sincerity reads as desperation. The conversation topic reads as boring.

And the player, who felt so easy and fun and right, got three more months of their time before confirming exactly who he was.

I'm not asking you to go on a date with someone you feel nothing for. But calibrate what you're using to measure it. Ease on a first date can mean skill. Nervousness can mean this is real to him. Those are not the same thing.

The man who stumbles toward you honestly is ten thousand times more likely to stay than the man who arrives perfectly.

Give him one more date.
