More than half the year is gone

Most men I know haven't changed a single thing since January. Same phone habits. Same sleep. Same excuses dressed up as plans. If you're reading this and feeling something, that's the part of you that still knows better.

More than half the year is gone: Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

I'm talking to the ones who keep telling themselves they'll start tomorrow.

The enemies aren't out there. They're in your pocket. On your plate. In your hand at midnight. Sugar, vape pens, gambling apps, video games designed by engineers whose entire job is to make sure you never stop. These aren't harmless habits. They are the thing standing between who you are and who you're capable of being. And they are very good at what they do.

A lot of men have this quiet fantasy that if the world fell apart, they'd rise to the occasion. They picture themselves calm under pressure, decisive, resourceful, the guy others look to. But that man isn't built in a crisis.

He's built in the Tuesday morning when you're tired and you train anyway. He's built in the boring repetition of eating well when it would be easier not to.

You don't discover who you are in the emergency. You find out who you've been all along.

Women already know this about you. They feel it. She doesn't need a catastrophe to see it. She sees it in the small things. Whether you keep your word. Whether you're actually there or just physically present. Whether you're managing yourself or coasting on her patience.

Sleep. Train. Eat like you give a damn. Be consistent enough that people around you can relax because you're steady. And if you don't know how, ask someone who does.

You still have time.

Enough time to become a man your daughter would brag about, your partner would trust with her whole nervous system, and you'd actually respect when you look in the mirror.

But not if you keep waiting for a better moment to start.
