Most couples fight to be understood. They never get there
My wife and I have rules in our relationship. Simple ones and harder ones. The simple rule is we never bring up issues over text. Ever. The harder ones took longer to build, but they're the ones that actually matter.

Last weekend we were both upset with each other. Nothing dramatic. Just two people living a real life together, bumping up against each other.
We know what happens if we start talking from that place. We know because we've done it. Two people in defense. Hours of conversation that goes nowhere. Both trying to be heard. Neither feeling it. The talking becomes the problem.
So the rule is: connection before conversation. A hug. Eye contact. Holding hands. Something that reminds us we're on the same team. It doesn't resolve anything yet. It just changes who's in the room.
Within three minutes, we were done. She told me her frustration. I said that sounds frustrating, I'm sorry. I told her mine. She said I get that, sorry. And we were back.
That's it. No breakthrough moment. No long conversation where everything finally made sense. Just two people who decided the connection matters more than winning the point.
If you're in a relationship where the arguments last for hours and nothing gets resolved, the problem probably isn't what you're arguing about. It's that you're trying to be understood before you've remembered you actually like each other.
