Most women I've worked with didn't leave bad men

They left men who were good in ways that didn't make the highlight reel. Patient fathers. Steady earners. Men who never raised a hand or a voice. Men who tried, in the limited language they had.

Most women I've worked with didn't leave bad men: Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

They left because they were annoyed. Chronically, quietly annoyed. And nobody told them that was normal.

It’s not a sign of incompatibility. Just the low hum of living with another human being who organises the fridge wrong and breathes too loud during movies.

I'm not saying stay when it's wrong.

I'm saying know what you're leaving for.

Because the man you find next will also annoy you. Differently, probably. New material. But the annoyance doesn't get replaced by choosing again. It just changes shape.

My wife and I have been together long enough that I know exactly which of my habits make her jaw tighten. She knows which of hers make me go quiet. We've stopped pretending otherwise.

What we've built together, that doesn't live in the moments where we're perfectly in sync. It lives in the fact that we're both still here, slightly irritating each other, and neither of us is going anywhere.

Find a man whose annoying qualities you can live with. Find a man who is genuinely good underneath them.
