My wife told me she felt disconnected from me

My first reaction was confusion. How was that possible? I spend every free minute with her. I text her during the day. I keep finding new ways to make her life easier. I listen when she's upset. And on and on the list when in my head.

My wife told me she felt disconnected from me: Jan-Willem van der Heiden with his wife and daughter

So why wasn't that enough? Why wasn't I enough?

That's the story I used to tell myself. She wanted to feel closer to me, and I got upset.

Now I hear it as an invitation.

An invitation to reach for her more.

To give her my full attention, the kind that makes her go a little shy.

To bathe her in sweet words until she lights up.

To touch her with no plan attached, just because she walked past.

To look at her across a crowded room so she knows she's always on my mind.

To remember the small thing she said on Tuesday and bring it back to her on Friday.

To slow down when she talks, so she can feel she has all of me and not the leftovers of my day.

To ask about her dreams again, the ones she stopped mentioning because nobody asked.

To hold her a few seconds longer than she expects, until her shoulders drop.

To choose her again today, as if I'd only just met her.

Doing more for her kept me busy. Being with her is what she was asking for.

When she says she misses you, she's opening the door.
