I messed up

Or did I?

I messed up: Owning your mistakes in a relationship. Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach, in Bali

My wife and I were riding our motorbikes. I was ahead of her when I spotted an electric cable hanging low across the road. Scary enough that I pulled over immediately, jumped off, and waved at her to slow down and stop.

She was so confused by my waving that she rode straight into the cable and almost crashed.

So who's at fault?

If your first move is to assign blame, either to me or to her, that's often why relationships fall apart. It was a miscommunication with a bad aftermath. I meant to warn her. She read my signal wrong. Nobody was careless, nobody was stupid, and nobody was the villain.

It happens constantly in relationships. Someone reaches out and it lands wrong. Someone tries to help and makes things worse. The gap between intention and impact is real, and pretending it isn't just turns small moments into long fights.

We laughed. We hugged. We got back on our bikes.

That's it.

Small mistakes don’t have to turn into big fights.
