What to expect from relationship coaching, from the first call to the last

If you have never worked with a relationship coach, it helps to know what happens. Here is how it usually goes with me, step by step.

Most people arrive at their first call a bit nervous. They do not know what will be asked, or whether they will have to tell their whole story. So here is what to expect.

Before you start: the discovery call

The first call is free and takes about 60 minutes. We look at where you are, what has been happening, and what you want instead. I ask a lot of questions. You do not need to prepare anything.

At the end I tell you what I think. Sometimes that is private coaching. Sometimes it is a smaller first step. Sometimes it is a therapist. You decide from there, with no pressure.

The first weeks: seeing the pattern

Early sessions are about seeing clearly. What happens in your relationship when things go wrong? Who pulls away, who pushes, and what each of you is protecting.

Most people are surprised how quickly the pattern shows itself once you look at specific moments instead of general feelings.

The middle: practising something new

Then we practise. Each week you leave with 1 small thing to do. A sentence before 7am. Touch without an agenda. A different response when you feel criticised.

This is the part that changes relationships. Not the insight, but the repetition.

When couples work together

Each partner gets their own practice. What she needs from him is rarely what he needs from her. Couples often tell me this is what makes it work: nobody is being told they are the problem.

What changes, and when

Couples usually describe the same order. First small surprises: things done without asking, thanks for something nobody mentioned in years. Then fewer fights, and faster repair when they do happen. Then feeling close again. And later, wanting each other again.

For individuals it is similar. First you notice the pattern. Then you catch it earlier. Then you choose differently.

What I expect from you

  1. Do the practice between sessions.
  2. Bring specific moments, not summaries.
  3. Tell me when something is not working.

That is it. You do not need to be good at talking about feelings. Most of the men I work with were not, at the start.

What relationship coaching is not

It is not therapy, and it is not a place to decide who is right. If there is a crisis, violence or addiction, start with professional help. More on that in couples coaching vs couples therapy.

A typical session

Most sessions follow the same rhythm.

  1. What happened since last time? We look at specific moments, good and bad.
  2. What was underneath? What did you want in that moment, and what did you do instead?
  3. What is the next step? 1 practice for the coming week, small enough that you will do it.

Sessions are calm and practical. There is room for emotion, and there is also always a next step.

Common surprises

People often tell me 3 things surprised them.

  1. How quickly things moved once they stopped talking in general terms.
  2. That the practices were so small. A sentence, a touch, a pause before replying.
  3. That their partner noticed, often before they said anything.

How to prepare for your first session

You do not need to prepare much. If you want to, think about 1 recent moment that sums up what is hard right now. Where were you, what was said, what did you feel? That moment is often more useful than the whole history.

If you are coming as a couple, agree beforehand that the session is not a place to win. It is a place to understand.

The end of coaching

Coaching has an end. We agree at the start what done looks like: fewer fights, faster repair, feeling close, wanting each other again, or meeting a partner who is ready. When you are there, we stop. Most people leave with a few simple habits they keep for years.

What if it feels hard?

Some weeks it will. Old patterns push back when you change them. That is normal and usually a sign something is shifting. Tell me, and we adjust the practice so it fits your week.

Questions people ask

Do we have to talk about our childhood?

Only when it helps explain what is happening now. Most of the work is about this week.

Will you take sides?

No. My job is to help both of you get what you need, not to decide who is right.

How long does relationship coaching take?

Many couples notice changes within the first month. Deeper patterns usually take a few months.
