You keep saying you want a man who has his life together

Then you get mad when he's not immediately available to text you back.

You keep saying you want a man who has his life together: Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

A client told me last week her guy takes hours to respond sometimes. He's in meetings. He's training. He's focused on his business. She knows this. She respects this about him. But she still feels anxious when the phone stays quiet.

She wants the outcome of a man with direction. She just doesn't want to feel what that actually requires.

Men who are building something aren't on their phones. They're not performing availability. They're in it.

That's the gap most women miss.

You want the grounded man, the present father, the guy who can hold his own. But you scan right past him because he didn't reply within twenty minutes or didn't pursue hard enough in the first week.

The ones chasing you hardest out of the gate are often the ones with the most time. And the most time usually means the least direction.

I wasn't texting my wife every hour when we started dating. I was working. I was present when we were together. Fully. But I wasn't performing connection through a screen.

Hell, I even said I’ll only text her once a day.

She didn't need me to do more. She had her own life.

That's what made the space for something real. Neither of us was auditioning.
