10 daily habits of happy couples

The daily habits of happy couples are smaller than you think. 10 habits I see in couples who stay close, and how to start them this week.

10 daily habits of happy couples: Jan-Willem van der Heiden with his wife

When people ask about the daily habits of happy couples, they often expect big things. Weekly date nights, long holidays, deep conversations. Those help. But the couples I see who stay close for decades mostly do small things, every day, without making a fuss about it.

Almost none of the couples I work with needed more love. They needed to stop waiting for the feeling and start doing the small things that produce it. Here are 10 of those things.

1. They say something kind before the day starts

1 sentence each, before either of them picks up a phone. He tells her he loves her and names something specific. She thanks him for 1 exact thing.

The first 5 minutes of the day set how the rest of it goes. Something said at 7 in the morning is still working at 9 at night.

2. They touch without a reason

A hand on the back in the kitchen. A long hug at the door. Sitting close on the couch. Touch that is not a request for sex. Happy couples touch many times a day, mostly without noticing.

3. They look at each other

When one talks, the other puts the phone down and looks up. It takes 2 seconds and it says: you matter more than this screen.

4. They send 1 message that is not about logistics

"Thinking about you." A photo of something that made them think of the other. Not who is picking up the kids.

5. They reunite properly

When they come home, they stop for 10 seconds. A kiss, a hug, a question. Not straight into what needs doing. Many couples tell me the first 10 minutes after getting home decide the whole evening.

6. They have a phone-free time each evening

Phones in the kitchen at a set time. A walk, a song, a conversation, a show they both watch together. Read how to stop phones ruining your relationship.

7. They thank each other for specific things

Not "thanks for everything." The exact thing, on the day. "Thank you for doing the school run so I could get to my meeting." People repeat what they hear works.

8. They ask what the other needs

Not once. Regularly. "What would help you this week?" Happy couples do not guess. They know, because they ask.

9. They repair quickly

Happy couples argue. They do not let it sit. A fight from last night gets a sentence the next morning. "I'm sorry about last night. I love you." Small repairs, done fast, stop small marks becoming distance.

10. They go to bed at the same time, most nights

Not always. But often enough to lie together for a few minutes, talk about the day, and fall asleep close.

Why small and daily beats big and rare

A holiday once a year is lovely. The other 350 or so days shape your relationship more.

The good feeling from a kind word wears off on its own by the evening. Topping it up is a daily job. That is why the happiest couples I know are not the ones with the biggest gestures. They are the ones with the most consistent small ones.

A story from my ebook

Anouk and Ben had 2 kids under 5. Their mornings were a relay race. By 6 in the evening they were both empty. I gave them the smallest assignment I have: 1 sentence each, before either of them picked up a phone.

Ben thought it was silly. On the third morning, Anouk put her hand on his shoulder and said, "Thank you for getting up with the kids so I could sleep." He thought about it for the whole drive to work.

Around day 10, Anouk noticed she was not snapping at 6pm any more. They still do it every day. Ben says it is the cheapest thing he has ever done that changed the most.

How to start

Do not try all 10 at once. Pick 1 for 2 weeks. The morning sentence is the best place to start. Then add another.

In my house

Ours happens before our daughter wakes, which means it happens at whatever hour she decides. It is the most reliable thing we do.

The habit behind all the habits

Happy couples are curious about each other. They keep asking. What are you worried about? What do you want next year? What did you love about today? Couples who drift often know each other's calendar and nothing about each other's inner life.

Ask 1 curious question a day. It takes 10 seconds, and it says: I still want to know you.

Questions about daily habits

What do happy couples do every day?

Small things, consistently. A kind word in the morning, touch without a reason, specific thanks, and time without phones.

How long does it take to build a new couple habit?

Most couples feel the difference in about 10 days. It takes a few weeks to become automatic.

What if my partner does not join in?

Start on your own. Most partners notice and respond within a week or 2.

Which habit should we start with?

The sentence before 7am. It takes 8 seconds and changes how the rest of the day feels.

Do happy couples ever argue?

Yes. They argue, and they repair quickly. That is one of their most important habits.
