"Your dad is the only man who truly wants you to do better than him."

Men share that meme like it's wisdom.

"Your dad is the only man who truly wants you to do better than him.": Men loneliness and brotherhood. Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach, in Bali

I see it everywhere. Comments full of agreement, hundreds of likes.

How devastatingly lonely that statement is.

The idea that life is meant to be faced alone, that other men are competition, that needing anyone is weakness. It's an epidemic, and most of us men have been inside it at some point.

I've had multiple friends get on a plane and fly to me because I said I wasn't doing well. Another friend sent me 7k$ (which was almost all he had) 5 minutes later after I said I needed it for a personal investment opportunity. A month ago I told another friend I was having a rough time. He texted me every day for 30 days checking in. When I said I was all good on day 4, he kept texting me anyway.

Most men will never experience that.

And you know? Because you are too damn afraid to ask.

That's the part nobody puts in the meme. Surrounding yourself with men who care about you requires telling them you need it.

It turns out there are countless men who want you to do better than them.

They just can't find you if you're hiding.
