How to recognise a man ready for commitment

How to recognise a man ready for commitment early on, from a coach who has worked with 1,000+ men: the signs to look for and the ones that mislead.

How to recognise a man ready for commitment: Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

Many women ask me how to recognise a man ready for commitment, because they have spent years with men who were not. They do not want to waste another year hoping.

I have worked with more than 1,000 men. I have heard them talk about the women they want to marry and the women they are passing time with. Here is what I have learned.

Ready is not the same as perfect

A man ready for commitment is not a man with no flaws. He is a man who has decided he wants a partner, and is willing to do what that takes.

You can usually tell within 3 months. Often sooner, if you know what to watch.

8 signs a man is ready for commitment

  1. He is consistent. He calls when he says he will. He turns up. His interest on Tuesday matches his interest on Saturday.
  2. He is clear. You do not have to decode him. He tells you he likes you, and what he wants.
  3. He makes plans in advance. Not last minute. He books the dinner for next week.
  4. He brings you into his life. You meet his friends. You hear about his family. He is not keeping you in a separate box.
  5. He talks about the future without being pushed. Not in a rushed way, but naturally. A trip next year. Where he wants to live.
  6. He has his own life in order. Work, friends, a sense of direction. A man who is still drifting rarely commits well.
  7. He can handle your feelings. When you are upset, he does not disappear or get defensive. He stays.
  8. He shows you who he is. He shares his fears, his failures, his hopes. A man who lets you see him is a man who is planning to stay.

Signs that often mislead

  1. Intensity. Big declarations in the first 2 weeks, constant messaging, wanting to see you every day. That can feel like commitment. Often it is excitement that fades.
  2. Chemistry. Strong physical attraction says little about readiness.
  3. Saying he wants a relationship. Many men say it. Watch what he does.
  4. Grand gestures. Expensive dinners or gifts early on are not a sign of commitment.

The men who ace the first 6 weeks are rarely the ones built for the sixth year. Measure what lasts.

Why women miss the ready ones

Many women find men who are ready for commitment a little boring at first. He is kind, consistent, available, and you feel nothing. That flatness often has a cause in your own history. If love used to feel like chasing, a man who does not need to be chased can feel flat.

How to test without playing games

You do not need tests. You need honesty.

  1. Say what you want, early. "I'm dating to find a long-term partner." A man ready for commitment will be relieved. A man who is not will usually show it.
  2. Ask for something small. A call at a set time. A plan for the weekend. Watch if he follows through.
  3. Share something vulnerable. See if he can hold it.
  4. Watch how he treats others. Waiters, his mother, his friends. You will be treated the same way eventually.

What men ready for commitment are looking for

In my experience, a man ready to commit is looking for a woman he can be useful to, who appreciates him, and with whom he can put the weight down. If you need nothing from him, he may assume there is no place for him.

What you can do to be ready too

Commitment is a 2 way thing. Many women are ready in their heads, and still carry armour from past hurts. Ask yourself: do I let a good man give to me? Do I tell him what I like? Do I give him time when he feels a little boring?

A man who is ready will meet you there. But he needs to see a door, not a wall.

A note on timing

Some men are ready at 28. Some at 45. Age tells you little. Behaviour tells you most. Watch what he does over 3 months, and believe it.

Questions women ask me

How long does it take to know if a man is serious?

Usually within 3 months, if you watch consistency, clarity and whether he brings you into his life.

Should I ask a man if he wants commitment?

Yes. Say early what you are looking for. It saves both of you time.

What if he says he is not ready?

Believe him. Men who say they are not ready usually mean it.

Can a man become ready for commitment?

Yes, but usually on his own timeline, not because you waited for him. Watch what he does now.

Is it a red flag if he has never had a long relationship?

Not on its own. Look at how he treats you, his friends and his family. Consistency over time matters more than history.

What if he is ready and I am not sure I am?

Tell him. A man who is ready will usually prefer the truth to a guess, and it gives you both time to see where it goes.
