Why do I attract emotionally unavailable men?

Why do I attract emotionally unavailable men again and again? What men told me about who they choose, and how to change who you let in.

Why do I attract emotionally unavailable men?: Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

"Why do I attract emotionally unavailable men?" It is one of the most common questions I hear from single women. She is warm, smart and ready for something serious. And yet the men who show up are the ones who disappear, keep things vague, or never quite commit.

I have coached over a thousand men. I have heard, in their words, what draws them in and what shuts them down. Here is what I have learned about this pattern.

It is not only who you attract. It is who you choose.

Most women attract a range of men. Some are available, some are not. The pattern usually is not in who shows up. It is in who you feel something for.

Many women feel a strong pull towards emotionally unavailable men, and very little for available ones. That pull feels like chemistry. Often it is familiarity.

Why unavailable feels like chemistry

If love in your early life was unpredictable, your body learned that love feels like chasing, waiting and hoping. An unavailable man gives you exactly that feeling. Your nervous system lights up. It feels like attraction.

An available man, kind, consistent and clear, does not give you that feeling. So he seems boring. You might say there is no spark.

That flatness has a cause. It lives in your nervous system, and it can be retrained.

The armour that filters the wrong way

Many women who have been hurt build armour. They become very independent. They never ask for anything. They keep a little distance. They test.

The armour works. That is the problem. It filters out the men who would have given, because those men do not want to fight their way in. And it lets through the ones who like a wall to climb, often the ones who enjoy the chase but leave once it is won.

How to stop attracting emotionally unavailable men: 6 steps

  1. Look at the pattern. Write down the last 3 men you fell for. What did they have in common in the first 2 weeks? Usually intensity, inconsistency and mystery.
  2. Measure differently. Many women measure how a man makes them feel in the first 2 weeks. The men who ace the first 6 weeks are rarely the ones built for the sixth year. Measure what he does consistently over 3 months.
  3. Notice your body around available men. When a kind man shows interest and you feel nothing, stay curious. Is it him, or is it unfamiliar?
  4. Lower the armour, a little. Ask for something small early. Tell him what you like. Let him do something for you. Watch who stays and who loses interest.
  5. Stop chasing. If he is vague, let him be vague without you. An available man will make his interest clear. You will not need to decode it.
  6. Give the steady ones more time. The spark with an available man often comes later, and it lasts longer.

What emotionally available men do

  1. They are consistent. They call when they say they will.
  2. They are clear about what they want.
  3. They ask about you, and remember.
  4. They introduce you to their friends and family.
  5. They talk about the future without being pushed.
  6. They can handle your feelings without disappearing.

What I hear from men

Many good men tell me they backed off from a woman they liked because she seemed to need nothing from them. Men who want to commit usually want to be useful to their partner. When there is no room to give, they assume they are not wanted.

You are not the problem

This pattern is not a flaw in you. It is a pattern your body learned to keep you safe. It can be unlearned, and many women change it within months once they see it.

A simple dating rule

For the next 3 months, give every kind, consistent man at least 3 dates before you decide, even if you feel flat on the first. And give every intense, inconsistent man no more than 1 chance to be clear about what he wants.

This is not about forcing feelings. It is about giving your nervous system time to learn that steady is safe. Many women tell me the man they almost dismissed on date 1 became the one they could not stop thinking about by date 4.

Questions women ask me

Why am I only attracted to men who are not available?

Often because your nervous system associates love with uncertainty. Unavailable men give you that feeling, and it reads as chemistry.

Can I learn to be attracted to emotionally available men?

Yes. Attraction can change when you give steady men more time and lower your armour a little.

How quickly can I tell if a man is emotionally unavailable?

Watch what he does over weeks, not what he says in the first few dates. Consistency tells you more than intensity.

Am I emotionally unavailable myself?

Sometimes. Many women who attract unavailable men also keep a little distance themselves, often without noticing. That armour is worth looking at gently.

How do I stop chasing men who are not interested?

Decide in advance that vague interest gets no chasing. Let his actions tell you what he wants, and give your attention to men who make it clear.
