How to stop dating the wrong men

If you keep ending up with men who cannot commit, the problem is rarely bad luck. Here is how to change the pattern.

How to stop dating the wrong men: How to stop dating the wrong men. Jan-Willem van der Heiden, relationship coach

You meet someone. It feels electric. For a few weeks it is everything. Then he pulls back, gets vague, and you are left wondering what happened. Again.

I hear this story from single women all the time. And it usually has less to do with the men than with the filter.

Why it keeps happening

  1. Familiar feels like chemistry. If love felt uncertain growing up, uncertainty can feel like attraction.
  2. Calm feels boring. A steady man who texts when he says he will can feel flat at first.
  3. You see potential, not behaviour. You fall for who he could be.

5 signs he is the wrong man

  1. Words and actions do not match.
  2. Plans are vague and last minute.
  3. He avoids talking about where this is going.
  4. You feel anxious more than calm.
  5. You are doing most of the reaching out.

5 signs he might be the right one

  1. He is consistent.
  2. He makes plans and keeps them.
  3. He is curious about your life.
  4. He talks about the future without being asked.
  5. You feel calm around him.

How to change the pattern

  1. Slow down the start. Let consistency show itself before you invest.
  2. Ask what he wants early, and believe the answer.
  3. Give calm men a third date, even if the spark is small.
  4. Notice when you are making excuses for him.
  5. Walk away sooner, and stay away.

Look at your side too

This is not about blaming yourself. But many women who attract unavailable men keep a little distance themselves. When you open up to a man who is ready, it can feel scary. That is worth looking at. See why do I sabotage good relationships.

A new rule for the first 3 dates

On the first 3 dates, pay more attention to how you feel than to how much you like him. Calm and curious is a good sign. Anxious and hooked is a warning. This one change helps many women I coach slow down and choose better.

What to do when you feel the pull

You meet someone who feels electric, and the old pattern starts. Here is what helps.

  1. Name it. This feels familiar. Familiar is not always good.
  2. Slow down. Do not text back straight away, do not cancel plans for him.
  3. Watch what he does over the next 3 weeks, not what he says.
  4. Talk to a friend who knows your pattern.

Why good men can feel boring at first

If love felt uncertain growing up, a steady man can feel flat. There is no rush of anxiety, so your body reads it as no chemistry. Give it time. Many women I work with find that attraction to a good man grows slowly, and lasts far longer.

Rebuilding after a run of wrong men

If you have had several hard endings, take a little time before dating again. Not to hide, but to get clear. Write down what each relationship taught you, what you will not accept again, and what you want instead. Then date from that list, not from the hope that this one will be different.

Questions people ask

Why am I only attracted to men who are not interested?

Often because uncertainty feels like chemistry. That can change with practice and awareness.

How long should I wait before deciding?

Give it enough dates to see consistency, but do not ignore clear signs. A few weeks usually tells you a lot.

Is it me?

It is a pattern, not a flaw. Patterns can be changed.
