12 small gestures that make a big difference in a relationship, each taking less than a minute, from a coach who has seen what works in 100+ couples.

12 small gestures that make a big difference in a relationship: Jan-Willem van der Heiden with his wife

In my experience, small gestures that make a big difference in a relationship matter more than any grand romantic plan. Most couples I work with do not need a holiday. They need 12 things that take less than a minute, done often.

Here they are.

1. 1 sentence before 7am

Before either of you picks up a phone, tell them something specific you love or are thankful for. It sets the whole day.

2. A hand on their back as you pass

In the kitchen, in the hallway. Touch that is not asking for anything.

3. Putting your phone face down when they talk

It takes 1 second and says: you matter more than this.

4. A message that is not about logistics

"Thinking about you." In the middle of the afternoon.

5. Making them a tea without being asked

In my ebook, this was on Emma's list. Her husband Raf had been washing her car every Saturday for 3 years. What she wanted was a tea when she was on a long call, a message in the afternoon, and 10 minutes on the couch when she got home. "She doesn't even care about the car," he said.

6. 10 seconds at the door

When either of you comes home, stop. Hug, kiss, look at them. Then do the logistics.

7. Thanking them for the exact thing

"Thank you for sorting the car insurance. I didn't have to think about it once."

8. Saying you trust their decision

"You made the right call on that." For many men this is the most powerful sentence they can hear.

9. Telling her she is not too much

On a normal day, when nothing is wrong. "You are not too much. I like how much you are." For many women it is the sentence they have been waiting for.

10. Booking the babysitter

Not asking if you should. Just doing it, and telling them the date.

11. Phones in the kitchen at 8

1 song. Then whatever happens. In my ebook, Kate and Johan did this. By the end of the second week they were talking until 10.

12. A long hug

Longer than feels normal. 20 seconds. Bodies calm down when held that long.

Why small beats big

A big gesture is lovely, and it fades. The good feeling from a kind word wears off on its own by the evening. Topping it up is a daily job, and it takes about 8 seconds.

Couples who feel close after 20 years are not the ones with the most expensive anniversaries. They are the ones who never stopped doing the small things.

Why the right small gesture matters

Not every gesture lands. Raf's car washing was kind, and it did not reach Emma. Most of us give what we would want to receive. The fastest way to find out what lands for your partner is to ask.

Each write 5 small, specific things the other could do in a normal week that would feel like care. Swap lists. Do 2 of them this week. Not the easy 2.

How to start

Pick 3 from this list. Do them every day for 2 weeks. Then ask your partner which one they noticed most.

In my house

My wife's list surprised me. 2 of her 5 were smaller than anything I had been trying, and 1 thing I had been doing for years was not on it at all.

What changes

Most couples notice the mood at home change within 10 days. More laughs. More eye contact. Less snapping at 6pm. Then, usually in week 3 or 4, 1 of them looks at the other across the room and feels it again.

What these gestures have in common

Each of these 12 gestures does 1 of 3 things. It makes your partner feel heard, seen or understood. Under every argument I have sat in is a moment where 1 of those was missing. Small gestures put them back, many times a day.

How to keep them going

Attach each gesture to something you already do. The morning sentence happens before you pick up the phone. The hug happens when the front door opens. The phones go in the bowl when the dishwasher goes on. A gesture tied to a moment is far more likely to last than one you have to remember.

Questions about small gestures

What are small things that make a big difference in a relationship?

Kind words in the morning, touch without a request, specific thanks, phone-free time and asking what would help.

Do small gestures matter more than big ones?

For most couples, yes. Small gestures done daily shape how the relationship feels far more than a big gesture once a year.

How do I know which gestures my partner wants?

Ask them to write 5 small, specific things. Then do them.

What if my partner does not notice?

Keep going for 2 weeks. Then ask which 1 they noticed most. Many people notice more than they say.

Are small gestures enough if we have bigger problems?

They will not solve everything. They make the bigger conversations easier, because both of you feel more cared for going in.

Which gesture matters most?

The 1 your partner asks for. That is why the list of 5 is so useful.
