What to do when your wife is unhappy
When your wife is unhappy and you do not know why, it is easy to fix the wrong thing. Here is what I tell the men I coach.

Men often come to me confused. I work hard. I help at home. I am not cheating, not drinking. And my wife is still unhappy. What am I doing wrong?
Usually, nothing dramatic. It is not 1 big thing. It is many small things she has stopped asking for.
Stop trying to fix her mood
When she is unhappy, your instinct is to solve it. Make a plan, give advice, take something off her list. Sometimes that helps. Often it makes her feel unheard. Before you fix anything, listen until she feels understood. See how to be a better listener for your wife.
Ask a better question
Not what is wrong. Try: what would make this week feel easier for you? Or: when did you last feel cared for by me? Then listen without defending.
Look at the mental load
Many unhappy wives are exhausted from carrying the thinking for the whole household. Helping is not the same as owning. Pick 1 area and own it completely, without being reminded. See how to divide household responsibilities without fighting.
Make her feel chosen, every day
- A specific sentence before 7am about why you love her.
- Touch without it going anywhere.
- Plan something without asking her to organise it.
- Notice what she does, and say it.

Do not take it personally, and do not ignore it
Her unhappiness is not always about you. But it is always your business. Stay close, stay curious and stay steady. When you stop getting defensive, she often tells you what is going on.
When she has stopped asking
If your wife has stopped asking for anything, take it seriously. It often means she has stopped expecting it. Read why your wife stopped asking for anything.
When to get help
If she seems low for weeks, has lost interest in things she loved, or talks about feeling hopeless, encourage her to see a doctor. That is not something a husband should carry alone.
If it is about the relationship, coaching helps. I worked with more than 1,000 men before I started working with couples. Read about coaching for men or apply for a discovery call.
What not to say
- You are overreacting.
- What do you want me to do about it?
- I already do so much.
- Calm down.
Each of these tells her that her feelings are a problem to be managed. She will either fight harder or go quiet. Neither helps you.
What to say instead
- I can see you are unhappy. I want to understand.
- What has been hardest this week?
- What would help, even a little?
- Thank you for telling me.
Then listen. Do not defend, do not fix yet. Most wives can feel the difference between a husband who is waiting to speak and a husband who wants to understand.
A 2 week experiment
For 14 days, do 3 things every day. Say 1 specific thing you appreciate about her. Do 1 thing at home without being asked. Give 1 hug with no agenda. Do not mention the experiment. At the end of 2 weeks, notice what has changed in the house.
Most men who try this tell me their wife notices, and the mood shifts.
When it is about you
Sometimes her unhappiness is about something you are doing or not doing. If she tells you, do not argue with her experience. You can disagree with the details later. First let her feel heard. Then change 1 thing and keep it up. Trust grows from what you do over weeks, not from what you promise in 1 evening.
Questions people ask
My wife says nothing is wrong, but I can tell something is. What do I do?
Tell her what you notice, kindly, and that you want to understand. Then give her time. Pushing rarely works.
Should I buy her a gift?
A gift is nice, but small daily attention matters more than an occasional big gesture.
What if she wants space?
Give it, and stay warm. Space with kindness feels different from space with silence.
