How to save your marriage when you still love each other

If you still love each other but feel far apart, your marriage can often be saved. Here is where I start with couples.

Most of the couples I work with are not in a crisis. They still love each other. They just do not feel it anymore. Somewhere between work, children and tired evenings, they lost each other.

If that sounds like you, there is good news. That kind of distance is usually reversible. Here is how I approach it.

1. Stop waiting for the feeling

Most couples wait to feel close before they act close. It works the other way around. The feeling follows small actions, repeated for weeks.

2. Each of you gets your own job

Saving a marriage is not 1 person's project. But it is also not a joint project where you both do the same exercises. What she needs from him is rarely what he needs from her. Give each other different things to do.

3. Stop the fight that keeps coming back

Almost every struggling marriage has 1 argument on repeat. Find the pattern under it: who pushes, who pulls away, and what each of you is afraid of. See how to stop having the same argument.

4. Repair faster

Happy couples fight too. The difference is how fast they repair. A short, simple repair beats a perfect conversation 3 days later. Read what to do after a fight with your partner.

5. Bring back touch without pressure

Touch with no agenda. A hug in the kitchen that is only a hug. When touch always leads somewhere, the partner who wants less starts avoiding all of it.

6. Appreciate out loud, every day

Say 1 specific thing you appreciate, every day, for 2 weeks. Specific means: what they did, when, and how it made you feel. It sounds small. It changes the mood of a house.

7. Protect time for just the 2 of you

Not a big date night once a month. 15 minutes most evenings, phones in another room.

When to get help

If you have tried and keep sliding back, a coach can help you see what you cannot see from inside. If there is violence, addiction or someone does not feel safe, start with professional help first.

Where to start

  1. Take the free relationship quiz to see where you are.
  2. Try The 30 Day Challenge: 15 minutes a day each, for a month.
  3. Or apply for private coaching with me.

A 30 day plan to start

Week 1: each of you says 1 specific appreciation every day. No exceptions.

Week 2: add touch without an agenda. A hug in the kitchen, a hand on the back.

Week 3: agree on a break sentence for arguments, and use it.

Week 4: protect 15 minutes most evenings, phones in another room, just talking.

This is the core of The 30 Day Challenge, with separate guidance for each of you.

What not to do

  1. Do not wait for your partner to go first.
  2. Do not use the past as ammunition in every argument.
  3. Do not try to fix everything in 1 big conversation.
  4. Do not tell friends and family everything before you tell your partner.
  5. Do not give up after 1 bad week. Progress in a marriage is never a straight line.

What it feels like when it starts working

Couples describe the same stages. First small surprises: jobs done before anyone asks, thanks for things nobody mentioned in years. Then fewer fights, and shorter ones. Then laughing together again. And later, wanting each other again. It often starts with 1 partner noticing that the other is trying.

If only you want to save it

You can start alone. Change how you show up for 4 weeks. Be kinder, steadier and clearer about what you need. Many partners notice and start to respond. If nothing changes, you will at least know you tried, and you will have clarity about what comes next.

Questions people ask

Can a marriage be saved if only 1 person tries?

Often it can start that way. When 1 person changes how they show up, the other usually notices and responds.

Is it too late if we have talked about divorce?

Not necessarily. Many couples I work with had that conversation before they started.

How long does it take to save a marriage?

Most couples notice the mood change within a few weeks. Feeling in love again usually takes a few months of steady practice.
